INTRODUCTION:
On a particular day as Jesus was praying in a certain place with his disciples, one of his disciples said ‘’Lord teach us how to pray as John taught his disciples on how to pray’’ and he said ‘’when you pray say, our father which art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come’’ etc.Lk.11:1-2. We are stopping at thy kingdom come because you know the rest, and we want to continue with ‘’thy kingdom come’’.
This prayer point has been misused by many denominations to deceive many people saying, except you pray the Lord’s Prayer, your prayer is vain. We want to warn Christians that this prayer point is not where prayer ended, but it was where prayer just started in the new covenant Church. It was like a prayer for beginners. But when people gets matured enough, they leave this prayer pattern to a higher class and pattern. Yet we are not discouraging people from praying it.
When you send your kid to school for the first time, do you send your kid to a secondary school or to higher school? No, your kid must start with the kindergarten level where he or she will begin with A B C D E F G H etc. That’s what this prayer stands for. They were taught how to start prayer. But today, those who do not use this form of prayer pattern are jested at by those who recite it every day and every week.
It was a kindergarten prayer, but when they got matured as Christians, their prayer pattern changes. Consider Apostle Peter’s prayer at the persecution of the Church by the Temple Priests, when they were arrested for healing the cripple at the beautiful gate. They had graduated by this time with another level of prayer form. So our Lord’s Prayer just taught them how to start prayer in many ways.
Then on a certain day, the Pharisees came up with the kingdom question and asked Jesus saying, ‘’Master, when will the kingdom of God come’’ Lk. 17:20. I believe they had discussed it among themselves before coming to Jesus. Just like how one denomination today does it, using this topic “thy kingdom come” to deceive many. The Pharisees came just to try Jesus with this question in other to disprove and accuse him before the Jewish community, but they failed woefully.
THEREFORE WE ARE CONTINUING WITH THE KINGDOM QUESTION:
HAS THE KINGDOM OF GOD COME OR IS IT YET TO COME?
Some people do not actually understand what the Bible is talking about, nor come to the real knowledge of God’s program in the scriptures. It is really a very big mystery to know these things and be able to have the real ability to communicate same to God’s people.
Many so called Christian faiths cannot explain if the kingdom of God prophesied by Jesus in that prayer has come or not. In fact the majority do not know anything about it. If you want to know about what I’m saying, just throw this question to your friends and well-wishers asking them, ‘’has the kingdom of God prophesied by Jesus in his prayer come or is it yet to come’’? I bet you the majority of the response will be in the negative.
Today we are going to trace for you the correct and better way to accept this truth. Although Jesus answering the Pharisees said to them ‘’the kingdom of God does not come with observation, neither will they say, Lo, it is here or there. The kingdom is within you’’ Lk.17:20-21. They were confused with the answer Jesus gave them and so they left his presence. That’s how many people do when they understand not a statement, they usually leave that scene. You should try to get the answer and the knowledge.
When Jesus said the kingdom is within you, that’s the truth about it, but it will be understood when one is born again and have the Spirit of Christ in-dwelling in him or her. Then such one would actually come to the real knowledge of that statement. If you do not have the Spirit of Christ in you, you will behave like the Pharisees and leave without the understanding of your question.
The kingdom of God is actually established in the lives of every born again child of God. So the kingdom is within you. People are the Church, not just a big building. The Church is seen where two or three are gathered in the name of Jesus, that’s the meaning of the kingdom is within you. Apart from this, let me also highlight another aspect of this kingdom establishment as a literal building.
Jesus in another passage said, ‘’Verily I say unto you, that there be some of them that stand here, which shall not taste of death, till they have seen the kingdom of God come with power’’ Mark. 9:1. This passage is also misunderstood likewise. A lot of people interpret it as the millennial reign of Jesus in the book of Revelation. Wow!
What is happening to the Church? If that passage means the millennial reign, then it is a contradiction because it has lasted over 2000 years, and it’s no longer a thousand years written in the Bible as the millennial reign of Christ, read Rev. 20:1-3. No event of the Bible adds a second to its prophecy, it must tally with the prophesied time. I have traced many scriptural prophesies and have come to the knowledge that no event adds a second or a minute to its time frame, though God is flexible enough in some cases.
THE KINGDOM OF GOD HAS COME!
What many people do not understand is the difference between the kingdom of heaven and the kingdom of God. When they say the kingdom of heaven, what they actually mean is the kingdom of God. These are two different kingdoms but from one God. The kingdom of heaven is an everlasting kingdom while the kingdom of God is the Church.
In the world today, the saints are in the kingdom of God according to the gospel of Jesus Christ. The Church as the kingdom of God is not known to the world as God’s kingdom on earth. If the world had known that the Church is the kingdom of God, I bet you they would come early and share the parts of the premises of each Church, and before we come to the Church, they would share the halls of every Church and we will not be allowed to occupy even a little space.
But as they do not know, we now see where to stand and where to sit down in the church hall. But even if one tells them that the Church is the kingdom of God on earth, they would not agree because of their blindness on Biblical matters. The interpret is a government of peace where no sin will be observed or seen. That's not it.
On that day when Jesus was teaching about the kingdom of God and he said ‘’there be some people standing here, (that is at that time of his earthly ministration), which shall not taste of death till they have seen the kingdom of God come with power’’ Mark. 9:1. The kingdom of God as at that day has not come, but it came to pass on the day of Pentecost. since then the kingdom of God has been here, as far as Rapture has not taken place.
Yes, Jesus’ word here was in favour of Apostles Peter, Mathew, Philip, John etc who were still alive when the kingdom of God was inaugurated at Jerusalem on the day of Pentecost by the coming of the Holy Spirit Acts. 2; Lev.25:9-10. This was the exact fulfillment of that prophecy. We should not take the inauguration of the Church as the millennial kingdom. You may ask, how do we know that the Church is the kingdom of God on earth? It is very simple. Jesus’ prophecy about the establishment of his Church did not take place during his life time Matt.16:18.
But it was done by his Spirit, the Holy Spirit. On that day when Apostle Peter was addressing the people, he made mention that this was also the fulfillment of the prophecy of Joel 2:28-30, as well as the inauguration of the Church at Jerusalem.
And Apostle Paul through this Spirit made us to know that ‘’the kingdom of God is not meat and drink, but righteousness, Peace and Joy in the Holy Ghost’’ Rom. 14:17. If the Church at Rome (not Roman Catholic) was told that the kingdom of God is not meat and drink, it concerns all other Churches of Christ. Righteousness, Peace and Joy in the Holy Ghost is the kingdom’s pattern and way of life. For the fact that this letter was written to the church is an indication that the church is the kingdom of God here on earth. Paul taught the Church not be in the same type of lifestyles like the world, because meat and drink (feasting) was the Babylonia pattern which Daniel rejected Dan.1:5, 8. The kingdom of God would not join them.
Again, Jesus as one of the conquerors of the world had come that he might establish a kingdom. All the kingdoms that were before him were overthrown by other conquerors, and they all had their kingdoms. For example, there was the kingdom of Gold, the kingdom of Silver, the kingdom of Brass and the kingdom of Iron. Jesus’ kingdom is the kingdom of righteousness. These kingdoms were “conquering and to conquer” according to seal one law Rev.6:1-2.
SOME SAY IF THE KINGDOM OF GOD HAD COME, THERE WILL BE PEACE EVERYWHERE:
The truth is that those who attack Jesus and say that he is a creature and a servant will not have his Spirit which gives these explanations of the word to his servants. These people shall continue in their effort to discredit Christ, that he is not the Almighty and that he was a creature, because of old “King James version’’ a passage in Col.1:15, which says “who is the image of the invisible God, the first born of every creature”.
But relax, Jesus is the Almighty, read Rev. 1:8. Jesus is now ruling the kingdom of righteousness because he is also the king of righteousness. This should not be confused with the millennial kingdom which shall last for only one thousand years. If you are following this teaching properly you will enjoy all explanations so far and no one will be able to confuse or deceive you by any means.
Jesus is ruling spiritually in his kingdom and we in the Church know this very well. That is why a song writer sang this song “Righteousness, Peace, Joy in the Holy Ghost, righteousness, Peace, Joy in the Holy that’s the kingdom of God”, ask Ron. Kenoly. When the kingdom was inaugurated, they were about 120 in the upper Room at Jerusalem.
There was a noise that greeted the inauguration and a crowd that gathered and witnessed the event. Some came from Rome, from Parthia, from all walks of life and they were astonished about tongues spoken by the Galileans. This tongues made the crowd to say “are all these not Galileans, how do we hear them speak in our language wherein we were born”? Acts. 2:5-8.
Since that time the kingdom of God has been here, and it will only stop when the Rapture occurs, but will continue forever according to Daniel 7:27. Rapture will not end the world and neither the Church. Instead, after Rapture the world would be ruled by Christ during the millennial reign when the saints will be in all offices. At that time the millennial reign shall be an extension of the kingdom.
We are aware that there is the kingdom of heaven, where God lives for now. It will come down to us after the millennial reign, as the Bible has indicated, but not immediately. Or rather a New Jerusalem shall come down out of God, that’s when Peace shall be undisturbed on earth.
So we say it loud and clear that “the Church is the kingdom of God on earth”.
It is only lack of knowledge that make people not to understand these hidden truth. Of course, to understand it, one must be born again and then be given the Spirit of God to indwell inside of him or her, before this kind of truth could be given to you. Always come here for certain truths of scripture, especially the ones you cannot understand.
